Walkable Stay in San Juan: Royal Sonesta Review + Isla Verde Food Tour
There’s something about landing in Puerto Rico that just feels like a reset. Having Puerto Rican ancestors, coming back to the island always feels special. I have stayed in AirBnbs and Hotels - and each experience feels different depending on the vibe you are going for.
If you’re looking for a trip that’s more about relaxing and less about logistics, this is the spot. We used the hotel as our home base and decided not to rent a car this time around—and honestly, it was pretty chill.
Relaxing at the Royal Sonesta San Juan
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the lobby—it is so elegant and really sets the tone for a beautiful trip. After a long travel day of walking and exploring , going into a room that is clean, comfy, and ready for relaxation is exactly what you need.
We spent our mornings doing daily walks on the beach. The hotel has its own private entrance to the sand it’s a totally peaceful, seamless stroll from the pool to the beach.
Walking the Isla Verde Beach
Pro-Tip: The Isla Verde strip has everything you need within walking distance—pharmacies, shops, and little spots to grab a cooler for your beach drinks and snacks.
Where to Eat near Isla Verde or in San Juan
Since my meal prep and "what I eat" content are some of your favorites, I had to document the food scene around the hotel. You don't need a car to find incredible, traditional Puerto Rican flavors right in this neighborhood.
Playa Papaya: This is a breakfast spot with healthy option. I had the Guava Pancakes—extremely sweet but worth it
Yamiko Sushi: For those who want something a bit lighter, there are some great sushi spots in PR!
Raíces: If you want a traditional atmosphere with a lot of character, this is the place to go.
Platos: This was my absolute favorite restaurant of the trip. It’s the closest spot to the Royal Sonesta and the traditional Puerto Rican food is top-tier. We loved the food (traditional arroz con gandulez, sorrulitos, alcapurria, tostones and papa rellena) and Coconut Mojitos so much that we actually ate here twice.
Unlocking More Puerto Rico Memories
San Juan is a special place, but it's just one piece of the island’s beauty. While this trip was all about the walkable ease of Isla Verde, stay tuned for some more uncoverings of adventures. From El Yunque to Luquillo beach.
I’m so excited to share more of those "Memory Vault" moments with you soon.
Whether you're here for the travel guides or the cozy lifestyle tips, I’m glad you’re part of this journey!
